USA steamrolling Internationals at Cup

With an 8-2 lead over captain Nick Price's Internationals, the Americans are more than halfway to the 15.5 points they need to win the biennial match play competition for a 10th time. Two years ago in South Korea after tumbling into a similar Day 1 hole, the worldwide side rallied by winning four of the fourball matches.

In the opening match, Thomas and Fowler lost the second hole to Charl Schwartzel of South Africa and Hideki Matsuyama of Japan but birdied the next two and built a 4-up lead at the turn.

"I wish I knew why I haven't been playing well, but all I can do is keep working hard and look forward", he said.

A birdie at the 12th hole followed by two pars proved enough for the United States to land the first blow, and they were soon 2-0 in front thanks to Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed. Not to be outdone, Spieth went pin-huntin on the par-3 16th, and stuck his tee shot tight, about six feet from the hole. The Americans almost won that one, too, except that Spieth narrowly missed birdie putts on the last two holes. There was just one problem: He stopped the ball before it stopped moving.

Spieth then made the biggest putt of the match, rolling in a downhill 35-footer that Grillo couldn't match from just about half the distance.

"We've played so much golf together and spent so much time around each other that we are pretty comfortable", Thomas said. "We are not laying down".

The power team of Koepka and Johnson took a little longer to find their stride, dropping two holes early but making the turn all square with Adam Scott and Jhonattan Vegas.

Matsuyama said that Hadwin had carried him on the back nine, as the global duo surrendered a two-up lead over the final four holes.

The South African duo of Branden Grace and Louis Oosthuizen gave the global team its lone win of the first session, beating Daniel Berger and Brooks Koepka 3 and 1.

The United States have won nine of 11 Presidents Cups, including the last six and if the global team, comprised of players from the rest of the world except Europe, are to end the drought they will have to overturn the biggest US advantage ever after Day Two of the biennial competition.

"Today was a grind - you could win a hole with a bogey or par most of the time", Oosthuizen said.

Phil Mickelson celebrates holing his birdie putt to win the match 1up on the 18th hole. Though even if they were to win all four of the foursomes matches, they'd still be a couple of points back.

This rematch from Friday's four-ball session was the most competitive match of the morning.

With the U.S. team already having a big lead, only a massive turnaround by the Internationals in the eight matches yesterday will leave any suspense heading into today's 12 singles at Liberty National.

There are no playoffs, with each side receiving a half point if a match is tied after 18 holes.

Lahiri and South African partner Schwartzel absorbed the worst beating as Presidents Cup rookies Charley Hoffman and Kevin Chappell administered a 6&5 thrashing.

Having fallen two points behind after Thursday's play, the global team would have been confident of chopping down the gap a little in the fourballs on Friday.

Things are getting out of hand at the 2017 Presidents Cup.

A ruthless United States showed a shattered worldwide team no mercy winning three of the four foursomes matches on Saturday to sit on the brink of a seventh straight Presidents Cup title.
