Spanish PM warns of 'greater harm' from Catalonia independence plans

Catalonia is not Europe

An earlier ruling by the court aimed at stopping last Sunday's independence referendum was ignored by Catalonia's leaders, however, and so far the region's politicians have also dismissed Spanish PM Mariano Rajoy's call to drop plans for a unilateral declaration, the BBC says.

Take, for example, the Spanish government's use of the Constitution and the judiciary to suffocate a series of political, economic and cultural aspirations in Catalonia.

More than 2 million Catalans voted to break off from Spain on October 1, in a referendum that was banned by the Constitutional Court and repressed violently by Spanish police.

Seibert told reporters in Berlin on Wednesday that "it's the role of every government to uphold the democratic order", noting that Spain's constitutional court had previously declared the referendum to be in breach of the country's constitution.

Following the king's address, Puigdemont said Felipe was "deliberately ignoring millions of Catalans" and called for mediation, The Telegraph reported. Most votes were counted despite police efforts.

Separatist parties only have a slim majority of the seats in the Catalan parliament.

A video posted on Sunday by Jaume Clotet, the Catalonian government's director of communications, showed the congregation offering a loud applause when the ballot boxes arrive in the church.

Joanna Cherry, a lawmaker from the Scottish National Party, called on the European Union to "up its game".

Catalan leaders claim around 800,000 people were prevented from voting due to the Guardia Civil's tactics.

The region's largest opposition party mounted a legal challenge and filed a writ of protection with the federal tribunal, saying that a declaration of independence by Catalonia would violate the constitution and "destroy" the rights of regional deputies, according to El Pais newspaper on Thursday.

Spain has been thrown into turmoil in these past few days; brother turned against brother, state against country.

"Whenever we have trusted the Spanish state, they have cheated us".

"Spain will maintain that this vote is not legitimate, but the strength of feeling demonstrated can not be ignored by Spain", it said.

A banner reading "EUROPE HELP US" hung from an apartment block in Vic on Tuesday.

"What kind of democracy - particularly an European Union member state - attacks its citizens for wanting to vote?" Her party lost a legally binding referendum on Scottish independence from the United Kingdom in 2014 - the terms of which were hammered out between both sides.

Many in the worldwide community are calling for open dialogue and mediation.

Instead, Puigdemont is widely expected to present a motion this week for the separatist-controlled Catalan parliament to declare independence.

This so-called "nuclear option" could reignite unrest in a region where secessionists are invoking the name of late dictator Francisco Franco in describing Rajoy's tactics. Catalan authorities provide health care, run their schools and police their streets.
