Senate Intel Committee Contradicts Trump: Russia's Election Meddling Not a Hoax

The committee chairman, Republican senator Richard Burr, said it remained an "open question" whether there was collusion by the Trump campaign with Moscow.

In an earlier post on Monday, Joel Kaplan, Facebook's vice-president of global public policy, said the company was planning to hire more than 1,000 people to help review advertisements globally. Russian officials have called the United States allegations of election meddling absurd and invented to deflect public attention from actual instances of revealed election fraud and corruption as well as other issues. "If we use exclusively the social media advertising that we've seen, there is no way that you can look at that and say that that was to help the right side of the ideological chart and not the left, or vice versa", North Carolina Sen.

Burr and the Intelligence Committee's top Democrat, Virginia Sen. The U.S. agencies found Russian operations included supporting the hacking of email systems of the U.S. political parties and relaying the emails to WikiLeaks, which later published hacked emails from the Democratic National Committee.

He said that the "facts of Russia's involvement in the election" must be made public before the political campaigns begin for the November 2018 USA general elections.

The social media companies have recently met with the committee and turned over information about ad purchases made by Russia-linked operatives, including RT and Sputnik, two news outlets controlled by the Kremlin.

Burr and Warner want to know more about what the online companies know about these operations and have convened an open hearing with them on November 1.

Twitter will also appear in front of the committees on Thursday. Google did not make any commitment.

Facebook is set to testify at a Senate hearing on Russia's interference and its role next month.

"The committee continues to look into all evidence to see if there was any hint of collusion", Burr said.

Dozens of intelligence and political officials have been interviewed since the investigation began in January.

Warner said the aim was to "sow chaos and drive division in our country".

The House Intelligence Committee is conducting its own investigation of Russian election interference, as is Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who is also investigating whether the president sought to obstruct justice.

The news conference Burr and Warner held to provide a progress report on their monthslong probe underscored their investigation is growing in scope and is not shying away from the question of collusion - which Trump has repeatedly dismissed as a "hoax". The committee hopes to talk to 25 more witnesses later this month.

As to the broadest question about whether Russian Federation did, in fact, launch an influence campaign, that was never in dispute for Burr and Warner. "And I assume that the same tactics that you saw in Montenegro, in France, in Belgium and in the United States will continue to be tested within our structure of the election process", Burr said.

"You can't walk away from this and believe that Russia's not now active".
