Hurricane Ophelia becomes 10th hurricane of 2017

Hurricane Ophelia path track map

Ophelia is not a threat to United States land, but is raising a few concerns in western Europe.

Located in the central Atlantic about 760 miles southwest of the Azores, the hurricane poses no threat to land and would probably be unremarkable if not for its place in the record books.

Hurricane Ophelia, which formed this afternoon, is the 10th consecutive hurricane this season, putting 2017 in a unique club that includes just three previous years that have spawned ten hurricanes in a row.

More information about the hurricane can be found online.

The NOAA National Hurricane Center's latest storm path shows Ophelia reaching the coast of Portugal by late Sunday night as a post-tropical cyclone with hurricane-strength winds. It is possible that this has happened since 1893, but we didn't have the technology to see it.

Storms become hurricanes when they reach 74 miles per hour.

While Ophelia may lose the technical aspects that make it a hurricane, it could still pack a punch.

The hurricane season officially, at least on paper, ends on November 30.

"This is a relatively unusual track for a hurricane to take, but it's not unheard of", said UK Met Office forecaster Aiden McGivern in a video.

Ophalia is presently the only storm the NHC is tracking in the Atlantic or Pacific.

With the organization of Tropical Storm Ophelia, there have now been 15 named storms this season.

After moving past Spain, forecasters expect Ophelia to come quite close to the Irish coast as a strong storm on Monday.
