Facebook is hiring another 1000 people to review and remove ads

Facebook chose to add more employees to its global ads review team and said that it would work to better its machine learning so that it could more efficiently flag and remove ads that violate the advertising policies.

Joel Kaplan, Facebook's vice president of global policy, wrote in a blog post Monday that the social network is "taking aggressive steps to strengthen" how it reviews ads. He said for 99 percent of the ads, less than $1,000 was spent. Twitter and Facebook had also been invited but they have also not disclosed whether they will honor the invitation.

But Facebook says the ads, which ran between 2015 and 2017, focused on divisive political topics such as gun rights, racial issues and immigration.

Twitter said last week that it had found around 200 accounts linked to Russian interference in the 2016 election.

"As we fully examine these ads in the coming days, we will be particularly interested in understanding their full reach, in particular to determine what groups and individuals were most heavily targeted and why", Schiff said.

Facebook's decision to give the ads to Congress means the pressure is now on lawmakers to release the ads to the public.

He did not refer to specific issues in the message, which comes as Facebook and other technology companies are under increased scrutiny amid a U.S. investigation into potential Russian involvement in the 2016 U.S. Presidential election campaign. The company has turned over to Congress the 3,000 political advertisements that it traced to Russian Federation and pledged to bring more transparency to election advertising on the site.

Reports in the Daily Beast and Washington Post have revealed that some of the 3,000 ads were created to provoke social divisions in the U.S. One set of ads encouraged Americans to attend an anti-Muslim, anti-immigration rally in Idaho.

Ignoring the obvious fact that these moves come far too late, there's still a massive lack of transparency about what Facebook says will make its advertising more transparent. "But we support Congress in deciding how to best use this information to inform the public, and we expect the government to publish its findings when their investigation is complete".

The adverts were sold to fake accounts which were likely operated from Russian Federation.

In the past month congressional officials have scrutinized Twitter and Facebook for evidence of Russians using their platforms to influence the outcome of the election. So what did it do to stem the obvious rise in the scale and scope of misinformation, fake news and even foreign state meddling on the site in the months leading up to the election?

Donald Trump barely squeaked by with an electoral college win, and with these Facebook numbers, it's becoming increasingly clear that he only did that with the help of the Russians posting fake news on Facebook.
