Bangladesh health department to launch cholera vaccination for the Rohingya

Fleeing for their lives

The home minister had also said that India would not violate any global law by deporting Rohingyas, as it was not a signatory to the UN Refugees Convention 1951.

The UN has described the government-sanctioned crackdown on Rohingya as "a textbook example of ethnic cleansing".

Scores of Rohingya villages have been torched.

Mark Lowcock, UN under-secretary-general for humanitarian affairs, while appealing for access to the population in northern Rakhine, said the situation was "unacceptable" and the flow out of Myanmar has not stopped yet.

A small United Nations team visited the area this week and said the suffering was "unimaginable".

The news came as Bangladesh minister of Road Transport and Bridge Obaidul Quader said during a visit to Cox's Bazar the Rohingya refugees were an "unbearable burden" to his country.

An estimated 2,000 Rohingya are arriving in Bangladesh every day, Joel Millman of the International Organization for Migration, told a separate briefing.

Aid agencies are warning of acute shortages of food for the exhausted, hungry and weak refugees arriving in Cox's Bazar, which could soon lead to widespread malnutrition, IOM said.

The World Health Organisation also says cholera is also a major risk.

The UN has labelled Burma's refusal to grant access to Rakhine state - the scene of alleged ethnic cleansing of Rohingya Muslims - as "unnacceptable".

Myanmar has come under global criticism for barring aid groups, journalists and other outsiders from independently traveling to the region to see the situation there.

Lowcock said that he believed "a high level" United Nations team would be able to visit the area "in the next few days", without elaborating, repeating UN's demands for Myanmar to allow "unhindered (and) unfettered" access to the state.

Hindus and ethnic Rakhine were also among the dead - allegedly killed by Rohingya militants.

Describing the violence in Myanmar's Rakhine state as "ethnic cleansing", Haque said the worldwide community has been made aware of how the country was "snatching the rights" of the Rohingya.

But Bangladesh minister Mahmood Ali said there had been a repatriation offer in what he called "friendly" talks in Dhaka with the representative of Myanmar's civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Bangladesh's Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haque is said to have conveyed this to his counterpart S Jaishankar while he was in New Delhi to attend the World Economic Forum meeting.
