Worldwide flight delays caused by glitchy check-in system

Global airports systems crash meltdown gatwick washington paris charles de gaulle

Malaysian airports are not affected by the crashed check-in system that is causing major disruption in airports around the world.

A spokesperson in Washington for Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority announced that Southwest Airlines had reported having a computer issue that caused minor delays in that Reagan National Airport.

Gatwick said that systems were only down for two minutes with some airlines reporting problems.

Virgin Australia has not been affected, as it uses a different check-in system.

The problem has caused check-in delays and booking problems for many airlines including British Airways, Qantas, and Lufthansa. As a result of the incident, customers experienced disruption to certain services.

As the software is used by the airlines and not by airports, the problem spread fast across the world.

Amadeus said that all systems were working normally by 9:30 am ET.

Airports tried to minimise the error with Heathrow describing it as a "momentary IT glitch" and Gatwick referring to the issue as "intermittent" problems.

Today's outage, by contrast, has seemingly affected airports and airlines on at least four different continents.

In a Facebook post, Changi Airport said the check-in process may take longer as manual boarding passes have to be issued.

In response to the BBC, Amadeus explained that a "network issue" caused the disruption.

Passengers are seen waiting to check in for flights at London's Heathrow airport in this file pic. "That action is ongoing with services gradually being restored", a company spokesperson told FOX Business in a statement.

"This was a worldwide failure (of the Amadeus system)".
