'Tourism unaffected' as 134000 flee Bali volcano threat

The Latest: Bali volcano fears spark exodus of 75000

Indonesian authorities raised the alert level for Mt. Agung in Bali to level 4, the highest alert level classification, signifying the possibility of volcanic eruption.

Indonesia's National Disaster Mitigation agency says more than 57,000 people have now fled the surrounds of Mount Agung because of the risk of a major eruption.

That they're showing signs of erupting at the same time is pure coincidence, said Benjamin Andrews, of the Smithsonian Institution's Global Volcanism Program.

The evacuees are scattered in over 500 locations across the island, taking shelter in temporary camps, sports centers and public buildings.

Authorities said last week that Mount Agung has shown signs of magma rising, forcing them to create a 7.5-mile buffer zone around the mountain where the volcano is located.

Of course, Indonesia, with more than 100 active volcanoes, is no stranger to preparing for the increased seismic activity.

The volcano last erupted in 1963, killing around 1,100 people.

Despite the significant increase in estimated evacuees, the government said it was prepared.

"I would definitely be following the advice to stay outside the exclusion zone".

Airlines are closely monitoring the situation, and some anticipate an eruption that would cause the release of ash clouds are unsafe for air traffic.

Over 1,000 people died when Mount Agung last erupted in 1963. Sirens will be sounded if an eruption occurs.

Indonesia, which sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, has almost 130 active volcanoes, more than any other country.

The entire population of Ambae is being moved from the path of the "increasingly active" Marano volcano, also known as Lombenben, according to the Pacific nation's government.

Another volcano, Mount Sinabung on Sumatra, has been erupting sporadically since 2010, sometimes blasting volcanic ash several miles into the air and forcing more than 30,000 to evacuate their villages.
