N. Korea threatens to sink Japan, reduce United States to ashes

World Politics is Amoral Lessons from Crisis in the Koreas and the Rohingya Pogrom

The most recent satellite images of North Korea's nuclear site taken Friday show a greater number of surface disturbances following Pyongyang's sixth nuclear test than previous tests at Punggye-ri, USA analysts say.

While there are reports of Russian smugglers exporting oil and other sanctioned goods to North Korea, 90 percent of all North Korean trade goes through China.

The 28-member bloc said it was adding nine individuals and four organisations to the blacklist, including the North Korean state-owned Foreign Trade Bank, in line with UN sanctions announced in August after Pyongyang tested an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of reaching the United States. That would be much higher than most official estimates, which have varied.

The United States will not give up on using diplomacy to persuade North Korea to give up its nuclear and ballistic missile programs, the State Department said Wednesday.

In their preliminary assessments, the Japanese, U.S. and South Korean governments said the yield was 160, 140 and 50 kilotons, respectively.

Japanese professional wrestler-turned-lawmaker Antonio Inoki, who has conducted sports diplomacy with North Korea since the 1990s, has urged Japan to do more to calm escalating tensions between the USA and North Korea.

Pyongyang claims it detonated a hydrogen bomb in this latest test, which its state media swiftly described as "a flawless success".

President Moon Jae-in on Thursday dismissed the idea of a nuclear-armed South Korea, rejecting growing public discussion of whether atomic weapons are needed to counter threats from the North.

North Korea's announcement came just hours after a large quake was detected near the country's only known nuclear test site in the mountainous region of North Hamgyong province.

While it was impossible to put a number on the scale of the North Korea risk, war games carried out through history have simulated what could happen as a result, said Tina Fordham, managing director and chief global analyst at Citi.

A pre-emptive strike against Pyongyang's leadership would be hard to undertake, but it's widely seen as the most realistic of the limited military options Seoul has to deny a nuclear attack from its rival.
