Mixed start for Wall Street stocks

The tech sector (+0.8%) topped today's standings, followed closely by health care (+0.6%); on the flip side, the energy sector ended unchanged but led for the full week, up 1.9%.

Technology was the best performing of the major S&P sectors, up 0.75 percent, its fourth straight day of gains to recover from a selloff earlier in the week. On the Nasdaq, 1,462 shares rose and 1,338 fell.

US stocks continued to increase Friday, with both the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq closing at record highs, as investors digested a batch of released economic reports.

In oil markets, Brent crude traded about half a percent lower around $56.90, while USA crude traded slightly lower near $51.42.




The S&P 500 rose less than one point to open flat at 2,510 points, and the Nasdaq added 16 points to start the day at 6,469 points.

In Europe, the pan-European Stoxx-600 index was around 0.03 percent. The Chicago purchasing managers' index for September and the final reading of consumer sentiment will also be published. The Dow climbed 4.9 percent for the third quarter, the S&P advanced 4 percent and the Nasdaq gained 5.8 percent.

Advancing issues outnumbered declining ones on the NYSE by a 1.50-to-1 ratio; on Nasdaq, a 1.35-to-1 ratio favored advancers.
