Millions Impacted With Equifax Data Breach; Arkansas Attorney General Now Giving Tips

Step 3 in Equifax's unfreeze process

So almost half of American's personal data is now in the hands of criminals, "What we've seen here is the most outrageous, the most egregious example of a company not doing what it needs to do when it comes to protecting consumer information", said Maura Healey, Massachusetts Attorney General.

"They can take out a mortgage, file tax refunds, file Social Security benefits, you name it, they can take all your benefits away", says cyber security expert Avivah Litan. It seems that each day now we're learning more about the hack of Equifax and the subsequent breach of the personal data of over 143 million American adults.

The credit monitoring company's call centre staff say that Canadians who have Equifax accounts in the United States could be at risk of having their data compromised, such as those who have lived, worked or applied for credit south of the border. It is used by banks, government agencies, and companies - including other credit reporting services. If you answered yes to any of these questions, you have credit. So, if you contact them to see if your information was breached you may or may not be getting the most accurate information.

Visit equifaxsecurity2017.com to check if your personal data has been affected.

Carefully review bank and credit card account statements and look for unauthorized charges.

The company has set up a website for consumers to figure out if their information has been compromised and sign up for credit monitoring.

"When a data breach occurs, our primary concern is protecting Georgia consumers who may have been impacted", said Attorney General Chris Carr.

Monitor your credit reports. Note that under federal law, you are entitled to one free credit report each year from each of the three major credit reporting agencies.

Even though the breach is one of the largest ever, and may already be responsible for a spike in consumer fraud, Wall Street was surprised by the extent of the public's anger.

You can also freeze your credit.

KAKE News reached out to Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt to see if Kansas will file a class action lawsuit against Equifax.

You can freeze your credit online but calling is far less risky and you may also be charged a $5 to $10. Make sure that you are signing up for the free service and not Equifax's paid service by mistake.
