McCaskill won't back Bernie Sanders' push to expand Medicare for all

Obama did exceed authority on'Dreamers

For months, public debate over the future of the US health-care system has been focused on one theme: the inability of Washington Republicans to repeal-and-replace the Affordable Care Act, a vow they made incessantly on the campaign trail.

But he concluded single-payer would save money in other ways.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who said as recently as this summer that single-payer was "on the table", has not signed on to support Sanders' bill.

"I just handed over this card, my Canadian health care card to my doctor, and that was it", Martin said. In the last few months, you have shown the American people what you stand for, when you voted for legislation to throw 32 million Americans off of the health insurance they now have, while giving huge tax breaks to the rich and large corporations.

The bill would revolutionize America's health-care system, replacing it with a public system that would be paid for by higher taxes. Everything from emergency surgery to prescription drugs, from mental health to eye care, would be covered, with no co-payments.

During the second year of the transition all children up to age 18 would be eligible to enroll in the so-called Universal Medicare Program.

Meanwhile, Trump and Senate Republicans are trying to rush through a last ditch health care bill that would gut Obamacare and cost millions their health insurance by turning it into a block grant program to the states. To become a single-payer system, as coverage climbs up the income ladder, the new reform would have to lure Americans out of private health insurance. The support it is generating is significant, however, in showing how the Democratic Party has lurched leftward since President Donald Trump's election, and telling of where Democrats will head as the party prepares for 2020. Democrats dispute this but many admit there is room for improvement.

Already, two Democrats seen as potential presidential contenders, California Sen. Sanders introduced similar legislation in 2013 with no co-sponsors, so it's a measure of Sanders' influence within the Democratic Party. Bernie promises that the typical American working family will enjoy a $5,000 a year savings, but wait - there's more!

"In public polls, 94 per cent of Canadians say that our health-care system is a source of personal and collective pride - even more than ice hockey", she said, earning laughs from the crowd.

"Most of the party's congressional leaders and vulnerable Senate incumbents are steering clear" of endorsing the legislation, however, writes Politico's Elana Schor. Several Democrats facing tough re-elections next year in GOP-leaning states say they want to focus on strengthening Obama's existing law, including Montana's Jon Tester and Missouri's Claire McCaskill.

Critics say that Sanders has released scant details on how he plans to pay for the system.

Schumer, of NY, recently said he'll be reviewing the "many good" proposals from Democrats on improving and expanding health care coverage, according to Politico.

"Sen. Patty Murray (Wash.), the ranking Democrat on the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee that is weighing a bipartisan compromise to stabilize the ACA, also wouldn't commit: "'There's a lot of Democratic ideas out there, and I haven't had the chance to look at all of them, ' Murray said, adding that she remains "very focused" on the committee's work", Elana writes. Typically those systems were instituted while healthcare costs were still fairly low, and then kept down by government fiat. What makes them hard to evaluate, however, is that we don't know how much he expects his single-payer health plan to cost. "And that's one way to do it, but in terms of health care that's a separate issue".

The political war along the way to a full single-payer system is unlikely to be rewarding. The senator Bernie Sanders is expected to introduce his Medicare for All bill this week, with a considerable number of co-sponsors. "But they are on the wrong side of history". But he said Americans would benefit from an end to the endless wrangling they now do with insurance companies.

Senator Lindsey Graham of SC, one of the plan's authors, said he was not ready to give up the long-held Republican goal of repealing Obamacare despite a stunning failure to muster enough votes within the party this summer to kill the law. 'Your income went up - you can't get this. You've got to argue with insurance companies about what you thought you were getting.

"Are we wasting an enormous amount of money in the current system?"

Regardless, the bill is destined to die before the Republican-controlled Congress.
