London rejects Uber's license

Quebec renews — but modifies — Uber pilot project

London's mayor said yesterday that people angry about the decision by transit authorities to strip Uber of its license to operate in the city should blame the ride-hailing company itself. Transport for London said its review of the service found Uber demonstrated a lack of corporate responsibility in a number of issues, including its approach to reporting serious criminal offenses. They have let down their drivers and customers by failing, in the view of TfL, to act as a fit and proper operator.

Uber has operated in Bradford since 2015, when it launched its UberX service with a pool of self-employed private hire drivers using its app to pick up fares.

Khan said in a statement that it would be wrong "to license Uber if there was any way this could pose a threat to Londoners' safety or security".

Uber has also been criticised by unions and MPs overworkers' rights. Uber asked its customers to "defend the livelihoods of 40,000 drivers - and the consumer choice of millions of Londoners".

Uber chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi stepped up Uber's response when he appealed on Twitter to Londoners to "work with us" to resolve the issue.

TfL has said Uber can operate until the entire appeals process ends, which could take months.

He wrote in a tweet: "Dear London: we r far from flawless but we have 40k licensed drivers and 3.5mm Londoners depending on us".

Company accuses mayor of 'giving in to a small number of people who want to restrict consumer choice'.

Khosrowshahi, who took over recently to revive the company's image after a string of worldwide scandals, tweeted: "Dear London: we are far from ideal but we have 40k licensed drivers and 3.5mm Londoners depending on us".

Khosrowshahi said it might be easier to say the city's refusal to renew the company's license is unfair, but that the "truth is that there is a high cost to bad reputation".

Uber, which is valued at about US$70 billion (S$95 billion) and whose investors include Goldman Sachs, has faced protests around the world for shaking up long-established taxi markets. It added UberX, which competes more directly with the city's storied black cabs, a year later. The company has some 40,000 drivers on its books, but has been the subject of a fierce campaign against the service by traditional black cab drivers, who say they are subject to much tighter rules and regulations.
