Irma | UK defends hurricane response as critics say it's too slow

Thomas Cook are to evacuate more than 2,000 UK holidaymakers from Cuba after Irma

"Wild isolation that made St. Barts, St. Martin, Anguilla and the Virgin Islands vacation paradises has turned them into cut-off, chaotic nightmares in the wake of Hurricane Irma", a report by the Associated Press says, according to Travel Insider.

He is 55-year old Derek Ragnath, formerly of Mahaica Public Road near the police station.

"St. Thomas and St. John in particular "'took a devastating blow from Hurricane Irma: "blew homes out, tore roofs off, breached walls, took out windows", he said.

The UK has helped to distribute water bottles to 700 of the most vulnerable households affected by Hurricane Irma on the British Virgin Islands.

Meanwhile, the National Police Chiefs' Council confirmed that officers would provide support to the British Virgin Islands force as part of the relief effort.

A number of prisoners are still on the run after more than 100 escaped when Hurricane Irma hit the British Virgin Islands.

The destruction Hurricane Irma caused on Caribbean islands has been properly shown in pictures published by NASA.

British police officers will be deployed along with nearly 500 troops as part of the country's efforts to step up support to the Caribbean islands left devastated by Hurricane Irma.

More British troops are being sent in to help British Overseas Territories affected by the storm.

The team were stranded in Barbados overnight on Friday - but were able to help the British Virgin Islands' governor's permanent secretary David Archer to return to the islands' main island, Tortola.

"There is a huge amount of damage to buildings, but fortunately everyone we have seen so far has been ok", he wrote. The contrast before and after the storm is stark, NASA's Earth Observatory reveals.

Irma made U.S. landfall in Key West, then again on Marcos Island on the USA state of Florida's Gulf Coast.

In a release on Sunday. the Prime Minister announced a £32 million relief fund to support the humanitarian effort and the United Kingdom was the first country to arrive on the scene and the United Kingdom government is also doubling all public donations made to the British Red Cross appeal.

Johnson has defended his government's response to what he called an "unprecedented catastrophe".

The UK government will announce fresh support for British overseas territories devastated by Hurricane Irma within days, the foreign secretary has said.

French President Emmanuel Macron is heading to the hurricane-battered region on Tuesday, but Downing Street was "not aware of any plans" for British ministers to visit the Caribbean disaster zone.

Nine people were killed in the British territories in the hurricane out of a total of at least 50 dead in the region.

Defending the UK's preparedness for the disaster, Mr Johnson said: "It doesn't make any sense when a hurricane is impending to send in heavy aircraft or to send in ships that are not going to be capable themselves of withstanding the storm".
