European Union court orders Slovakia and Hungary to accept asylum-seekers

The EU was accused of "raping" its own values yesterday after its top court ruled that countries should be forced to accept refugees under a relocation scheme.

Slovakia and Hungary did not succeed with their lawsuits against the EU Council over refugee quotas.

In their case before the ECJ, Hungary and Slovakia argued that there had been procedural flaws and that the decision was neither a suitable response to the migrant crisis nor necessary to deal with it.

In Budapest, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto called the court's decision "outrageous and irresponsible".

"I was convinced that such a decision would be made [by the court], but this absolutely does not change the stance of the Polish government with respect to migration policy", Szydlo told reporters at a business conference.

Reaction to the ruling was considerably calmer in Slovakia, where prime minister Robert Fico said that, although his government's view of the refugee relocation scheme "has not changed at all" it would "fully respect the verdict".

Hungary and Poland have refused to take part, while Slovakia has only taken in a small number from Greece.

In its ruling Wednesday, the court rejected all the arguments brought by Hungary and Slovakia.

The two nations opposed a 2015 decision by the EU's top policy body, at the height of the Mediterranean migration crisis, to assist Italy and Greece by making other European Union states admit 120,000 people. The decision is also likely to be welcomed by other countries such as Greece and Sweden, where the sheer volume of new arrivals threatens to overwhelm the system.

EU Migration Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos said on Wednesday that arrangement "continues to work and deliver results", the AP reports.

'It is time to be united and show full solidarity, ' Mr Avramopoulos said.

The countries claimed the relocation scheme was non-binding as they had voted against the deal, together with the Czech Republic and Romania. European Union officials say countries will still have to share eligible asylum-seekers arriving in Greece and Italy up until September 26.

Iverna McGowan, director of the Amnesty International's European Institutions Office said: "Today's ruling shows that no country can hide from their responsibilities to refugees".

Hungary's government built security fences on its borders with Serbia and Croatia two years ago to stop refugees and migrants entering the country along the so-called "Balkan route" from Turkey to Germany.
