Emma Thompson urges Aung San Suu Kyi to restore peace in Burma

In Sri Lanka, Tamils, Muslims rally for Rohingya

A crackdown by Myanmar's army, launched in response to attacks by Rohingya militants on August 25, has sent almost 400,000 refugees from the stateless Muslim minority fleeing into neighboring Bangladesh.

Myanmar's state counsellor and de-facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize-winner, has been sharply criticized for turning a blind eye to ethnic violence.

Boris Johnson has called on Aung San Suu Kyi to do more to condemn the "gross abuse of the human rights of the Rohinyga population" in Myanmar as hundreds of thousands of Muslims are displaced from the west of the country.

Global pressure on Myanmar heightened this week after United Nations rights chief Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein said the violence seemed to be a "textbook example of ethnic cleansing".

The UN has described the army's violent crackdown as a "textbook example of ethnic cleansing", and called for "immediate steps" to end the violence Wednesday.

"It is a defining moment, in many ways, for this new emerging democracy, although it is a power-sharing arrangement", Tillerson said.

Tillerson stated that Suu Kyi has found herself in a hard and complex situation and that Myanmar's democracy is facing a defining moment. "We appreciate the hard and complex situation Aung San Suu Kyi finds herself in". "I think many people around the world share that admiration".

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday reiterated his call for Muslims from Myanmar's Rakhine state to be granted nationality or at least a legal status that would allow them to lead a normal life. Observers say the violence is being carried out by the Burmese military.

The refugees are fleeing a fresh security operation in which military forces and Buddhist mobs have killed men, women and children, looted homes and torched Rohingya villages.

Rohingya refugees are seen at Thaingkhali makeshift refugee camp in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, September 14, 2017.

The Myanmar authorities have targeted Rohinyga civilians after an insurgent group attacked police and military posts in the northern Rakhine state.
