Delta's free in-flight texting service launches this weekend

Delta CEO Ed Bastian tells

In this age of constant connection, flights have been one of the final spaces of solitude, where airplane mode-enabled phones don't light up with a barrage of messages.

"We want our customers when they're flying to stay connected", Bastian said.

Free messaging will be available on all Gogo-enabled Delta flights, including all aircraft with two or more cabins.

The free messaging service will be available beginning on Sunday, October 1, and will be available to customers whether or not they've paid for in-flight Wi-Fi access. Specifically, Delta's partnership with Gogo, a popular in-flight Internet service, will be making this a reality.

Bastian noted during the interview on CBS This Morning that part of the difficulties with offering perks such as free text messaging is finding bandwidth for Wi-Fi.

You'll soon be able to keep in touch with friends and family on the ground when you're flying with Delta.

Delta today announced that it will become the first US global carrier to offer passengers free mobile messaging in the air. Bastian joined Delta in 1998 and took over as chief executive officer in May previous year.

The feature will also limit what kinds of messages the three apps can send: text only, no pictures or video, so mile-high video sexting is a no-go.

Among its major legacy competitors United and American, Atlanta-based Delta said it is the first to offer free mobile messaging and will have the most aircraft with free messaging of any carrier.
