China: Restrictions Against North Korea Announced

"This could probably mean the strongest hydrogen bomb test over the Pacific Ocean", North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho told reporters in NY on Thursday in response to a question about what action the regime might take against the U.S. Donald Trump has warned North Korea on a number of occasions, including at the recent UN General Assembly.

The statement from Kim Jong Un was very unusual because it came from the North Korean leader himself, rather than state media as most statements do, CBS News correspondent Ben Tracy reports. The statement is an unprecedented escalation in rhetoric.

The tremor occurred at 5:29 p.m., 20 kilometers southeast of the country's Punggye-ri nuclear test site in the northeastern province where the North conducted its sixth nuclear test September 3, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration.

In the clip above, the CBS This Morning panel explains the word "dotard" after Kim's use of it to describe Trump. Trump issued the warning of potential obliteration, and mocked the North's young autocrat as a "Rocket Man" on a "suicide mission".

MCEVERS: Today President Trump struck back with a tweet.

And other experts point out that North Korea's nuclear weapons program has developed over decades, surviving periods of starvation and economic crisis.

Abe, through a translator, echoed the president and said that pressure must be applied on Pyongyang "in a robust manner".

Kudos to our nation's president for signing an executive order Thursday calling for tighter sanctions against North Korea. Under Kim's leadership, North Korea has been pursuing a nuclear device that is small and light enough to fit on an ICBM, without affecting its range and making it capable of surviving re-entry.

The main reason for North Korea to take that risk would be to quiet outside doubts about whether it really has a thermonuclear weapon small enough to fit on a missile, said Jeffrey Lewis, a USA arms control expert at the Middlebury Center of International Studies at Monterey.

The president said "tolerance for this disgraceful practice must end now". India has said that it "deplores" North Korea's latest nuclear test, calling it a "matter of deep concern that DPRK [Democratic People's Republic of Korea] has once again acted in violation of its global commitments".

Moon praised Trump's bellicose speech to the United Nations about the threat, saying the USA had "responded in a very good way".

The natural disaster was detected in Kilju county in North Hamgyong Province, where North Korea's known Punggyeri nuclear site is located, the official said. As a case in point, North Korea also shares a long border with South Korea, but these countries have nearly no trade between them.

His opponent during last year's election, Hillary Clinton, took criticism for referring to Trump's supporters as belonging in "a basket of deplorables".

All 15 members of the Council, including China and Russian Federation, approved the sanctions, which also make it illegal for foreign firms to conclude commercial agreements with North Korean organisations.

This was an important signal of China's willingness to support US concerns about the missile program since oil represents about a third ($930 million) of North Korea's import revenue.

China's move to halt North Korean coal imports in February and its decision to stop selling fuel have crimped Pyongyang's ability to raise hard currency through exports.

Following Trump's United Nations speech, China's English-language edition of the state-run People's Daily in an editorial called the president's remarks "political chest-thumping [that] is unhelpful".

On Thursday in New York, Trump announced the latest steps to punish foreign companies that deal with the North.
