American tourists injured in acid attack in France

BREAKING: Four tourists have 'acid thrown in their faces' outside train station

All four women - two of whom were directly hit in the face - are now receiving emergency medical attention at a nearby hospital. The other two women are being treated for shock.

The attack occurred inside the Mediterranean port city's Saint-Charles train station at around 9.00 am. Fourteen firefighters in four rescue vehicles responded to the train station, according to media reports.

She did not release any further details about the suspects or the victims, including where in the United States the tourists were from.

According to the newspaper La Provence the woman told police that she "went crazy" and was not aimed at anyone in particular.

There was no immediate information on where the USA tourists are from. "We have been in contact with the students and their parents and remain in touch with French officials and the US Embassy regarding the incident".

The tourists were on their way from the southern city to Paris.

The perpetrator was described as "imbalanced", and rather than running away after the attack, she showed pictures of herself with burns. The teen struck the teacher's shoulder and fled before police came. The suspect has been arrested. They were not targeted due to their nationality, the source added.

The public prosecutor's office said the attacker "did not target anyone in particular". The alarming rise comes amid a clampdown on weapons and fears of a frightening new crime fad involving teenage motorbike thieves using corrosive substances, in part because they are relatively easy to obtain, The Washington Post reported last month. More than 1,800 attacks have been reported since 2010, with 458 of them taking place a year ago, according to BBC.
