What would happen if Trump tried to fire special counsel Mueller

Trump may ‘terminate’ Russia probe’s Mueller says president’s pal

The interviews suggest Mueller sees the attempted obstruction of justice question as more than just a "he said, he said" dispute between the president and the fired Federal Bureau of Investigation director, an official said.

Rosenstein, who has been on the job for six weeks, described Mueller as operating independently from the Justice Department in his investigation into whether the Trump campaign coordinated with Russian Federation in the 2016 presidential election.

The ex-FBI chief, James Comey, last week outlined awkward meetings with Trump and said the President made him uncomfortable discussing the investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn. "The FBI leak of information regarding the President is outrageous, inexcusable and illegal", said Mark Corallo, a spokesman for Kasowitz. If accurate, the report would also indicate Trump still has no understanding of the position the appointment of a special counsel has placed him in.

But Stephen Gillers, a New York University professor who specializes in legal and judicial ethics, said the Mueller interview with Trump presented "no conflict whatsoever".

Neither Trump nor Attorney General Jeff Sessions has offered public support for Mueller.

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich said Tuesday on ABC's "Good Morning America" that while he feels "independent counsels are very risky", he doesn't think Trump should force Mueller out.

Anxiety about the probe - and fresh concerns about the political leanings of some of the attorneys involved - is percolating in the West Wing of the White House. I think the best vindication for the President is to let this investigation to go on independently and thoroughly.

But at a separate hearing, Rod J. Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general who appointed Mueller and continues to oversee the investigation, promised lawmakers he would not permit Mueller to be dismissed without legitimate reason. "I think the way the investigation is shaping up, he's out to get the president".

The tweet from Conway came after the Trump White House had to put out a fire caused by Trump confidant Chris Ruddy.

"I don't think Trump should do anything but the congressional Republicans ought to look into it", Gingrich said.

The obstruction of justice investigation into the president began days after Comey was sacked on May 9, according to people familiar with the matter.

However, a close confidante of Trump's said Mueller's ousting is under consideration.

SCOTT PELLEY: Well, after Comey was sacked, the Justice Department named former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel to independently investigate the Russian Federation case.

WELKER: Is it because of something you heard from top officials at the White House?

Under the present circumstances, however, and not without regret, I believe that the same ethics rules the attorney general cited in his Tuesday testimony counsel against Mueller's continuing to serve in the role assigned to him.

Investigations are now under way into Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

BRENNAN: On CBS This Morning former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who had initially said he was a fan of Mueller, accused him of picking politically biased investigators.
