UK leader May seen fighting for survival after election failure

As recently as February, the architect of New Labour, Peter Mandelson, said "I work every single day" to undermine Corbyn, whom he considered "a sort of maniac". But Johnson said he backed May.

During the election campaign, May repeatedly talked up the dangers of a "coalition of chaos" if the opposition Labour Party were able to become the largest party. In December 2016, President Barack Obama told his former senior adviser David Axelrod that the "Corbynization" that happened to the Labour Party, which has moved even further left under Corbyn's leadership, is not likely to happen to the Democrats in the U.S.

The change was unlikely to significantly quell unrest within the party.

Instead of opting for a post-election shuffle, the Prime Minister retained key figures in her cabinet.

May shrugged off suggestions her days in Downing St. were numbered. I can not imagine a situation in which the DUP will have any influence on the Conservative Party or the Government's policies on equality. "I don't think you'll see in her memoirs "Oh I'm not sure whether I should've called that election back then", said Smith, the former head of Britain's Border Force who worked closely with May in organising security checks for the London 2012 Olympics.

"Do your best to avoid a "no deal" as result of "no negotiations", Donald Tusk, leader of the EU's ruling council, wrote in a tweet.

According to EU law, the United Kingdom will be removed from the union at that time even if negotiations have failed to produce an exit deal.

British Prime Minister Theresa May, who promised to be a "bloody hard woman" during her country's upcoming divorce negotiations with the European Union, has been ruthlessly reminded that British voters can be bloody hard as well. But few believe she can hang on for more than a few months.

May's authority over her party was shattered by the election result.

Asked if she is now just a caretaker leader, May noted that "I said during the election campaign that if elected I would intend to serve a full term".

The pound fell as low as $1.2636 from $1.2955 on Thursday, before recovering slightly to trade at $1.2737.

May and her team of ministers retain full legal powers and will continue heading the government, until a new one is sworn in.

On June 19, the first talks on Brexit is scheduled to happen and India would need to wait and watch what it's relation shapes like in the United Kingdom after the new government forms.

The outcome will throw Britain once again into upheaval less than a year after the country's decision to leave the European Union, which led the pound to collapse about 15 percent against the dollar between June and October 2016.

If she is to succeed in delivering the end of Britain's European Union membership which 52 per cent of the British public demanded a year ago, she must find a way to recapture the full support of her party because she will need their votes to pass legislation preparing for and ultimately enacting the departure.

But Elmar Brok, a German conservative and the European Parliament's top Brexit expert, told the Ruhr Nachrichten newspaper that the talks would now be more complicated. It would make British exports more price competitive around the world - something that was reflected in a rise in shares for major British companies on Friday.

Even Michael Fabricant, returned as the Conservative MP for Lichfield, said Mr Corbyn had fought "a brilliant campaign", particularly on social media, and had mobilised young voters.

In light of the fact that Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has called on the Prime Minister to resign as she had sought a mandate and not got it, and has asserted that his party is ready to form the government (with the help of others), it remains to be seen if the Tories can command a majority in the House.

Hardly had the votes been counted in Britain's indecisive election, in which no party got an outright parliamentary majority, than politicians took to airwaves and tapped away on Twitter to spin what the result meant.

Many are now clinging to hopes that May's drubbing makes moderate "remain" Conservatives more powerful, or that it allows Labour, which made a hard Brexit part of its election manifesto, to backtrack towards something more 'soft, ' retaining rights and privileges for Britain's economy in Europe.
