Uber dismisses over 20 employees after law firm's probe

Uber CEO Travis Kalanick launched an internal investigation into the company’s workplace

The housecleaning at Uber Technologies is just getting underway.

Uber, the ride-sharing tech company, has fired at least 20 people for hostility towards women after reviewing 215 sexual harassment claims and other complaints.

The Travis Kalanick-owned company has taken some form of action in 58 of these cases, while it dismissed another 100 claims.

Fowler also wrote that when she attempted to transfer to another engineering organization within Uber, her request was blocked despite a having a ideal performance score and meeting all the criteria for transferring. After that, said Wilson, "we made recommendations to the company and they abided by them". "This issue is going to keep being at the forefront until the investigation is completed".

Uber Technologies Inc. retained Perkins Coie after former engineer Susan Fowler posted a blog in February about sex harassment at the company.

Uber's woes don't end there.

Travis Kalanick, Uber's CEO, said at the time: "What she describes is abhorrent and against everything Uber stands for and believes in". Her direct manager has already been fired in addition to many other senior execs.

On Tuesday, the San Francisco company held an all-hands meeting for its 12,000 employees, where it discussed those findings and, according to a source familiar with the meeting, 40 additional employees were reprimanded or referred to counseling and training. The issues deal with harassment, discrimination, retaliation and other HR matters.

The firings and hiring of Saint John are big steps in Uber's trek toward repairing its image, which has been tarnished by Fowler's blog and a number of management missteps so far this year.

Several high-placed executives have resigned amid the turbulence, including a former head of engineering, who had failed to disclose harassment complaints at his former employer.

Uber CEO Travis Kalanick speaks to students at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) campus in Mumbai, India on January 19, 2016.

The bulk of the complaints came from Uber's San Francisco headquarters. The company created a hotline where workers could make complaints. Hornsby previously told USA Today that the company has been offering leadership sessions that were designed by Frei. "That hasn't been done yet".

Uber also is searching for a chief operating officer and chief financial officer as it prepares for a possible public stock offering. She previously worked as the head of music and entertainment marketing for PepsiCo.
