Twitter reacts hilarious to the BBC election debate

BBC to Tighten Rules on Free TV for Old People By Gary Cutlack on 23 May 2017 at 12:30PM No more putting up grandad in return for a free TV license

And in a nod to the comment by Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron who said "Theresa May might be sizing up your house", in reference to Conservative policy which would see elderly voters in England with more than £100,000 in assets have to pay for their social care costs, one person tweeted "Peering out my window to see if Theresa May is outside my house".

This said, nobody expected the official Twitter account of Netflix drama House of Cards to wade in.

The Times leads with a story saying Theresa May will pitch herself as the "unifying leader of a great national mission", suggesting that the Brexit deal is more important than the TV debate which she did not attend on Wednesday evening.

Mr Corbyn will appear alongside Lib Dem leader Tim Farron, UKIP's Paul Nuttall, Green co-leader Caroline Lucas, Plaid Cymru's Leanne Wood and the SNP's deputy leader Angus Robertson, who leads the party's MPs at Westminster.

"Far from being a boring election, I think this one may come to be seen as the beginning of a realignment in politics that changes the political map and our concepts of right and left" - Daniel Finkelstein in the Times.

This afternoon, a journalist asked Theresa May whether she'd watched the big TV debate.

The Prime Minister, who has faced heavy criticism for not making the Conservative case personally, twice said the Home Secretary "did an excellent job" in the debate.

In her summary, Rudd said "a vote for anybody but Theresa May is a vote for Jeremy Corbyn".

Comparisons between the prime-time election debate and teatime game show the Weakest Link are rife within Thursday's papers.

"If you have a panel of people - one from the governing party (Conservatives) - one from what's regarded as a right wing party (UKIP) and five from broadly left-wing parties, and you give those speakers equal airtime, it means you're giving five slots of airtime to the left-wing parties for every two slots to the not so left-wing parties", he said.

(Trans: Come and have a go if you think you're 'ard enough).

"The Tories have been conducting a stage-managed arms-length campaign and have treated the public with contempt. Refusing to join me at #BBCdebate tonight would be another sign of @Theresa_May's weakness".

Many of her Cabinet colleagues have been forced to take a back seat in the campaign as party strategists attempted to focus on Mrs May's personal qualities.

"I have never been afraid of a debate in my life".

Britain's right-wing press and a number of political commentators have accused the BBC of deliberately selecting a left-leaning, "anti-Tory" audience for its live general election debate on Wednesday night. Mr Farron said. "The Prime Minister is not here tonight".
