Teens' vaping rates decling, study says

No longer the hot new thing? Teen vaping falls, study says

E-cigarette use among youth dropped for the first time in six years, driving a significant decrease in overall tobacco consumption among middle and high school students, according to a survey published Thursday.

The report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows cigarette smoking and vaping rates went down in 2016.

The number of middle and high school students who used any tobacco product fell to 3.9 million in 2016 from 4.7 million in 2015, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"The good news is we've seen a decline in youth tobacco use during the past year, which was primarily driven by a decline in e-cigarette use", said Brian King, PhD, of the CDC Office of Smoking and Health. Some evidence also shows that e-cigarettes use can also lead young adults to use other forms of tobacco, alcohol or other drugs. The CDC attributes the decrease in these products to educational anti-tobacco ad campaigns like commercials and policies that restrict youth access to tobacco.

Adolescent cigarette smoking has been falling for many years, but the decline in e-cigarette and hookah use was more remarkable.

However other experts believe any declining trend with respect to tobacco usage is heartening and cause for optimism.

Four out of 10 school going children in the country smoke their first cigarettes before the age of 10, and cigarette sellers hardly refuse to sell the harmful item to them, says a new study. Use of the products among high school students fell to 11.3% in the 2016 survey, but King told MedPage Today that it is too soon to say if the decline in youth e-cigarette use represents a trend. "And the U.S. Surgeon General has also concluded that e-cigarette aerosol is not harmless and may contain other harmful ingredients including heavy metals, ultrafine particulates, and volatile organic compounds".

It found an overall decline in use of vaping devices, traditional cigarettes and other tobacco products.

Almost 2 million middle and high school students said they had used two or more tobacco products in the past 30 days.

That's because more kids and teens started to use e-cigarettes and hookah over the past five years, the report said.

"Reynolds and its subsidiaries share society's belief that minors should never use tobacco products, and we remain committed to transforming the tobacco industry through youth tobacco prevention efforts", Seccombe said.

The number of high school students who smoked cigarettes in the 30 days prior to being surveyed fell to 8 percent from 9.3 percent in 2015, the data shows. Despite the promising news, the 2011 to 2016 numbers show nearly no significant change in any tobacco use.

"We would expect that to continue", he said.

The decline in cigarette use follows a broad array of public health campaigns and coincides with the rise of vaping. "However, the bad news is that we still have about 3.9 million United States youth who are using tobacco products".

Among all middle school students in 2016, the most commonly used products after e-cigarettes were: cigarettes (2.2 percent), cigars (2.2 percent), smokeless tobacco (2.2 percent), hookah (2.0 percent), pipe tobacco (0.7 percent), and bidis (0.3 percent).

We plan to build on these vital efforts to reduce tobacco-related disease and death. Although many people believe that e-cigarettes are less risky than tobacco cigarettes, serious debates have sparked regarding their actual benefits and harms.
