Senate Committee Hearing With Intelligence Chiefs

Eric Trump: We have no dealings, no projects with Russia

Noting that none of the witnesses denied the Washington Post's report alleging Trump leaned on Coats and Rogers to talk to Comey about killing the Flynn investigation, Warner added: "It seems that what type of conversations the president had about the investigation will only be given in a classified setting".

Sen. Angus King of ME, an Independent who caucuses with Democrats, picked up on Heinrich's questions, demanding a "legal justification" for why Rogers and Coats were not answering questions.

The director of the US National Security Agency has said he has never been asked to do anything illegal or felt pressure to do anything immoral during his three years at the helm.

"I'm not going to comment those conversations", Coats said repeatedly in response to questions from several senators. Mark Warner (VA) questioned NSA Director Mike Rogers about the possibility he was asked to downplay or intervene in an FBI investigation by President Donald Trump. Comey says the president also spoke to him about the investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn, and said, "I hope you can let this go".

The Washington Post reported on Tuesday night that Trump had asked Coats to press James Comey, then Federal Bureau of Investigation director, to back off from focusing on his former national security adviser Michael Flynn. "The American public deserves to know what the president of the United States did and what he asked of the leaders of our intelligence community".

Mike Rogers, acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein will all testify before the Senate intelligence committee 24 hours before the Comey hearing. A day later Comey is scheduled to testify before the same Senate Committee.

"What you feel isn't relevant, admiral. I served on the committee here and often saw that information that we had discussed had been reported but it wasn't always accurate", Coats said.

Rogers told him, "I'm not interested in repeating myself, sir".

McCabe said the conversation may be within the purview of the investigation into Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

"My hope will be that Admiral Rogers and Director Coats won't try to hide behind executive privilege. about the press reports about the president asking them to downplay the Russian Federation investigation", Warner said. "I don't understand why you're not answering our questions". Rogers said, "I feel it is inappropriate".

KING: Then why are you not answering? The panel has oversight authority, not only when it comes to investigating the Russian Federation scandal, but over the us intelligence community itself.

However, under persisting grilling by the committee's top Democrat, Sen.

"There is a series of questions and I think some confusion about the timing of Mr. Rosenstein's memos and some of the circumstances around the firing of Director Comey", Warner said.

But even just talking to them about the FBI investigation would still be inappropriate, according to current and former intelligence officials.
