Saudi Arabia cuts ties to Qatar, cites "terrorism"

Egypt's foreign ministry also accused Doha of supporting "terrorism" in a statement as it announced the severing of ties.

Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the UAE, and Egypt say they have cut diplomatic relations and all land, sea, and air contacts with Gulf Arab country Qatar, citing "terrorism" and "flagrant violation" of worldwide law.

Saudi has also said Qatari troops would be expelled from the on-going war in Yemen.

Saudi Arabia cut all land air and sea contacts with Qatar 'and urges all brotherly countries and companies to do the same'.

Qatar and some of its fellow Gulf Cooperation Council members are now embroiled in a dispute over purported remarks by the Qatari emir in which he is alleged to have criticized their policies and called for better ties with arch-foe Iran.

Its Gulf Arab neighbours responded with anger, blocking Qatari-based media, including the Doha-based satellite news network Al-Jazeera.

The emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, at the South American-Arab Countries summit in Riyadh in November 2015.

"Imam Khomeini said the same thing more than 30 years ago", Khamenei said at the mausoleum of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, marking the 1989 death of the founder of the Islamic Republic.Relations with Washington were broken after Iran's 1979 Islamic revolution and enmity to the United States has always been a rallying point for hardline supporters of Khamenei in Iran.

Saudi Arabia's state news agency quoted an official source as saying that the move was to protect national security "from the dangers of terrorism and extremism". The chief worry among them is the Muslim Brotherhood, a Sunni Islamist political group outlawed by both Saudi Arabia and the UAE as it challenges the nations' hereditary rule. Western officials also have accused Qatar of allowing or even encouraging funding of Sunni extremists like al-Qaida's branch in Syria, once known as the Nusra Front.

Gulf countries led by Saudi Arabia fell out with Qatar over its backing of then-Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi, a Brotherhood member.

Shortly after, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates announced they would be ending diplomatic ties with Qatar. Since the meeting, unrest in the region has grown.

"We are friends, we've been friends now for a long time, haven't we?"
