Pittsburgh to Trump: You don't speak for us on climate

Buildings in cities from Boston to Paris lit up in green that night to show support for the agreement and a commitment to battling climate change.

"The Paris agreement represents every country - except Syria, now the USA and Nicaragua - agreeing that this is a serious problem, that everybody is going to take action to address the problem and they are going to do more and make more efforts in the world", Flatt said. "There is no way", Macron was quoted as saying in a separate televised address.

Kerry slammed the move as hearkening natural disasters of apocalyptic proportions, stating the decision is "one of the most self-destructive moves I've ever seen by any president in my lifetime". The non-binding agreement signed by 195 countries in 2015 pledges the United States to cut its carbon emissions over 25 percent by 2025 and to contribute billions of dollars to developing countries to help them do the same.

President Trump, on the other hand, stood alone before a group of his admirers, including many who are labelled as "climate sceptics" and serve in his government in important capacities such as director of the Environment Protection Agency.

At his White House withdrawal announcement, Trump complained that the global agreement, signed by 197 countries during the previous Obama administration, was "unfair" to American workers that imposed "draconian" restrictions on the U.S. sovereignty and domestic economic activities.

I thought about all the effort that had gone into getting the Paris Agreement adopted and operational.

Both his assertions are far from being true.

Almost 200 countries have ratified the Paris agreement.

As the biggest contributor of global carbon emissions, the USA has a special responsibility to lead in the area of climate change. Concerns about Trump's views on global warming and climate change have been cause for concern ever since his election given that he has refused to acknowledge the phenomenon in the past. In recent years, in fact, it has worked to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It had also promised to increase its forest cover to create an additional carbon sink of 2.5 to 3 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent by the year 2030.

In fact, India had said it would be in a position to scale up the ambition of its targets if it was in a position to access global finance and technology. He also spoke to Trump last month over the phone. Congressman Ted Lieu responded as well, saying, "abandoning the Agreement would also result in the United States ceding its leadership in addressing carbon and methane pollution at a time when we can not afford inaction". India's current annual production of coal is between 650 and 700 million tonnes.

"The No. 1 fastest-growing job is wind power technician". The withdrawal process could take up to three years.

Some within the industry have argued that the global agreement, which is voluntary, may have little actual impact; that the transition away from high-carbon energy sources is already underway, driven by technological innovation and changing economics, particularly the low price of solar and power and the improved competitiveness of natural gas, which emits less carbon than coal.

Opinions on Trump's job creation argument were more balanced. More people are employed in the renewable energy sector in the USA now compared to coal industry.
