Philando Castile's Mom Decries The Justice System That Failed Her Son

Officer Jeronimo Yanez, who fatally shot Philando Castile during a traffic stop past year has been found not guilty on all three charges by a jury consisting of 10 white people and two blacks.

He Yanez been found guilty, he could have faced up to 20 years in prison on charges of endangering safety by discharging a firearm and second degree manslaughter.

A jury of 12 jurors, two of them black, made a decision to clear Yanez of his manslaughter and reckless discharge of a firearm charges. Yanez is Latino and Castile was black.

The incident garnered national attention when Castile's girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, broadcast the incident on Facebook live.

Video footage recorded by Reynolds only seconds after the shooting showed Castile dying in the auto and Yanez standing outside the driver's side of the vehicle, continuing to yell while pointing his gun inside the auto. Meanwhile, Yanez yells at her and continues to point his gun. "If that doesn't make you believe in Jesus Christ, I don't know what does". Castile's girlfriend sat in the passenger seat, her 4-year-old daughter in the back.

The crowd in St. Paul is diverse and includes some people with children.

Jeronimo Yanez was also cleared of two lesser charges in the July traffic stop in a St. Paul suburb.

July 12: Castile's relatives say they will file a lawsuit in his death.

"He killed my boyfriend", Reynolds is heard saying in the video. After Castile told the officer he had the gun, Yanez told Castile, "OK, don't reach for it then", and, "Don't pull it out". Prosecutors said Castile had mentioned his gun to allay concerns, not to threaten the officer or escalate the situation.

Yanez was reportedly told that Castile had a license to carry a gun, with the officer claiming that Philando began to take the gun out to show him against Yanez's directions. Shortly thereafter, Yanez opened fire.

The 32-year-old Castile was black and Yanez, 29, is Mexican-American.

The footage sparked protests across the United States and further exposed tensions between U.S. police and African Americans. Many protesters accused officers of using excessive force and being trigger-happy - especially when interacting with black people. They said the officer was nervous, failed to follow training protocol and panicked after Castile volunteered that he was carrying a gun.

"The fact in this matter is that my son was murdered, and I'll continue to say murdered, because where in this planet (can you) tell the truth, and you be honest, and you still be murdered by the police of Minnesota", said Valerie, Castile's mother.

"My son loved this city, and this city killed my son", Valerie Castile said outside the courthouse Friday, "We're not evolving as a civilization, we're devolving".

In a statement provided to ABC Minneapolis affiliate KSTP, Reynolds said she was "incredibly disappointed" with the verdict. It was the 46th time Minnesota police had pulled Castile over for suspected traffic violations since he was 18.

SHAPIRO: Has Officer Yanez had any reaction to the verdict?

"It's a sad state of affairs when this type of criminal conduct is condoned simply because Yanez is a policeman", Reynolds said. The city will offer Yanez a "voluntary separation agreement" to help him transition to another career, it said.
