Pelosi defends leadership following special election loss

Gergen Trump could beat Dems in 2020

President Donald Trump says Republicans benefit as long as House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi remains in power. "Do you think people went to the polls and said, 'Oh my God, we've got to stop Nancy Pelosi?' I don't think so", said Rep. John Larson, D-Conn.

"There is a consensus, I think, that we can reach in the caucus that allows for a new leadership team to be put in place in a time that's well before, hopefully, November of next year".

"I think I'm worth it", she said.

One case in point is Joe Cunningham, a young Democrat challenging South Carolina Rep. Mark Sanford in 2018: He pledged Wednesday to not support Pelosi, who is the party's most prolific fundraiser and a savvy operator on legislation.

Soon, Democrats will have to decide whether they think they'd do better in next year's midterms by moving to the center or to the left - essentially, by winning converts or punishing heretics.

The news peg for these recriminations, of course, is the Democrats losing Tuesday's special election for a House seat in Georgia.

The party of Pelosi poured $30 million into the race between Republican Karen Handel and Democrat Jon Ossoff for the right to represent the Newt Gingrich conservatives of suburban Atlanta's 6th Congressional District.

Democrats lost another race in SC that same night, and that followed previous disappointments in Montana and Kansas.

It was laughable to watch the Party of Losers come up with reasons for why they never had a chance in Georgia, or say that the margin of victory was an encouraging sign of future Republican weakness.

But some rank-and-file House Democrats scoffed at such explanations and raised questions about Pelosi's continued leadership.

On the other hand, Republicans can nationalize 2018 against the Democrats pretty effectively at this point. "I would be very disappointed if she did", Trump said. "So, we're asking candidates in these deep, red districts to battle the Republican party".

Trump himself weighed in over Twitter Thursday morning with digs at Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of NY.

The shooting fit into the story line that the CLF and NRCC had written, of an out-of-control resistance motivated not on anything good, but on hatred of Trump. - Washington, who isn't married to his partner and doesn't look like he shaves every day might not beat even a weak GOP rival. Their attacks are often crude and unfair; but GOP voters believe them and develop an instinctual hatred of said politician.

The criticism toward Pelosi is not new but the recent backlash against her led some liberals to reiterate their support for the long-time party leader. With the Democratic leader having already stood up for herself this morning, telling everyone she wasn't going anywhere, Pelosi aides are now sending suggested tweets for allies of the former Speaker of the House to share on social media.

"I am a strategic politically astute leader", Pelosi said.

Democrats supportive of Pelosi have long argued that even if she stepped aside, Republicans would demonize any new leader the party elevated.

Fellow Democrat Tim Ryan, an Ohioan who challenged Pelosi for minority leader past year, offered the blunt diagnosis that "the problem is us, it's the party".

"Then there's also the numerous times Pelosi has praised former neoconservative and Wall Street shill President George W. Bush - she even wished for him to be back in the White House".

Some Republicans also view bipartisanship as a way to avoid a restrictive spending plan that would cap funding for US agencies and a government shutdown that President Donald Trump threatened in May.
