North Korea claims test of new cruise missile to target warships

"We are aware, certainly, of the situation and the suspension of additional launchers", Nauert said. Therefore, a show of strength is the best deterrent against North Korea, and must include sending Pyongyang the message that the United States will not hesitate to use every tool in its arsenal against the communist state if it should provoke us with an attack.

While on Tuesday, the 6,900 tone USS Cheyanne arrived in the South Korean port of Busan as the USA attempts to flex its muscles in the region.

The resolution slapped additional sanctions on North Korea and condemned the regime's continued proliferation of its nuclear and ballistic program.

It is the third since South Korea's new president Moon Jae-in came to power in May. North Korea fired several suspected short-range anti-ship missiles Thur.

"This new-type cruise rocket is a powerful attack means capable of striking any enemy group of battleships" that could threaten North Korea, KCNA said.

The North's media said the missiles were the same ones displayed during a military parade marking the birthday of late North Korean founder Kim Il-sung on April 15th.

"The launched cruise rockets accurately detected and hit the floating targets on the East Sea of Korea after making circular flights", KCNA said. The North's claims could not be independently confirmed.

"North Korea is poised to conduct its first ICBM test in 2017", Robert Soofer, deputy assistant secretary of defense for nuclear and missile defense policy, was quoted by the Japanese Kyodo news service as saying at a hearing of the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee on Wednesday.

The South said they were fired from the town of Wonsan and flew about 200 kilometers (125 miles) and landed in waters between the Korean Peninsula and Japan.

Thursday's launches came after two USA aircraft carriers deployed to waters off the Korean Peninsula as a show of force, recently left the Sea of Japan after holding joint exercises with Self-Defense Forces ships and fighter jets.

The US have contraversially began installing the THAAD anti-ballistic missile system on South Korea in a bid to nip Kim Jong-un's budding nuclear capability in the bud. This was a form of protesting South Korea's support of fresh United Nations sanctions adopted last week.

Moon said after the new launches that his government "won't back off even a single step and make any compromise" on the issue of national security. He also warned that North Korea could only face further global isolation and more economic difficulties. The two other fishermen, who wanted to return home, were repatriated on Friday.

Pyongyang often accuses Seoul of kidnapping its citizens or enticing them to defect to the South.

"I believe North Korea has the technology and only the stage left is to test it".
