Global dismay at Trump's pullout of US from Paris accord

PARIS, June 2 USA cities, states and businesses can fulfil commitments made by the United States under the Paris climate change agreement even though the US has withdrawn from the pact, former NY mayor Michael Bloomberg said in Paris.

"In Berlin, Greenpeace activists projected Trump's silhouette onto the side of the USA embassy along with the words "#TotalLoser, so sad!"

"That was done in the absence of the Paris agreement", Tillerson said.

In Durham, Mayor Bill Bell several years ago signed the U.S. Conference of Mayors' climate-protection agreement. As the New York Times reported Thursday, the USA has promised to supply up to $3 billion in aid for developing nations by 2020 to help them meet their emissions-cutting goals.

Trump railed against how "many [countries] will never pay one dime", but many countries will never poison the planet as much as we have, either. As NPR has reported, "the only other countries not part of the agreement are Syria, which is in the midst of a civil war, and Nicaragua, which argued that the Paris accord did not go far enough to curb global emissions". Laurence Tubiana, who served as France's special ambassador for climate change, says that the fact is that the rest of the world is moving.

Expressing deep concern over his successor's decision to pull out of the Paris climate pact, former United States president Barack Obama has said that by doing so, the Trump Administration has joined a small handful of nations that reject the future.

Rauner has yet to take a public stance on Trump's Paris exit, but governors in California, New York and Washington agreed to pursue their own carbon emission accord. He criticized the pact as a job-killer that put the United States at an unfair advantage.

Many politicians and other Americans jumped on Twitter after the announcement to cheer on Trump's "America first" emphasis on the economy.

Congressman Ted Lieu responded as well, saying, "abandoning the Agreement would also result in the United States ceding its leadership in addressing carbon and methane pollution at a time when we can not afford inaction". The Paris Agreement is a milestone of the ongoing UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, which is committed to ongoing annual meetings to regularly revisit and ratchet up nations' climate goals, making them more ambitious over time.
