German striker Werner expects tough test from physical Aussies

German striker Werner expects tough test from physical Aussies

Germany manager Joachim Low watched on nervously as his experimental team held on to beat Australia 3-2 in an edgy Confederations Cup group opener on Monday.

Goals by Lars Stindl and Leon Goretzka either side of a penalty from captain Julian Draxler saw Germany home to leave them second in Group B behind Chile, who they face in Kazan on Thursday.

But Australia can take heart knowing that they pushed the world champions, who had outscored opponents 27-1 since the previous time they allowed two goals in a game, a 2-0 defeat to France at Euro 2016.

"Whether that's Germany or against anyone else in this tournament, there's a belief within the group that if we stick to our structures and play well we can match the very best". Postecoglou's appointment represented fresh thinking from Football Federation Australia: for the first time in nearly a decade, the managerial position would be held by an Australian.

"In terms of a result it's a loss and the loss falls on me".

In this photo taken on Sunday, May 29, 2016, Germany's Antonio Ruediger kicks the ball during a friendly soccer match between Germany and Slovakia in Augsburg, Germany.

With a year to go before the World Cup, Loew has given a host of key players the summer off and picked seven newcomers in his squad for Russian Federation, which has a combined total of just 104 global appearances.

"They were world champions and we went there and got a draw and could have really won it".

With Bayer Leverkusen's Brandt causing mayhem down the right flank, striker Sandro Wagner had two clear chances, a diving header and then a shot which both went wide.

The opening half-hour saw Australia on the ropes, with Stindl's fifth-minute opener bringing fears of a belting.

They were pegged back when Tommy Rogic equalized for the Socceroos on 41 minutes.

It was not to last.

But Germany were by no means in control and a blunder by Bernd Leno gifted Tomi Juric a tap-in to make it 3-2, setting up a nervy finish.

Germany's players protested about the goal to American referee Mark Geiger - possibly for an offside or a handball by Juric from Rogic's original shot - and the official signalled that he would refer to the VAR in a tournament where its usage has been controversial. Australia managed to put Die Mannschaft's back line under serious pressure over the last 10 minutes, but Leno's hands got a bit better, and he caught everything the Aussies sent his way.

Germany almost settled the game when Timo Werner hit the post late on, but the world champions would cling on to secure a 3-2 win.

"The belief for me comes from over a decade with the Socceroos", he said.
