George plans on leaving Pacers in 2018

NBA: Paul George's Future — Was Larry Bird Leaving Pacers a Clue?

However, because he wasn't named to an All-NBA team in the spring the Pacers lost out on the chance to offer him a five-year, $207 million Designated Player Veteran Exception.

This past season with the Pacers, George averaged 23.7 points, 6.6 rebounds and 3.3 assists, leading IN to the playoffs.

This could really shake up the landscape of the NBA and influence what happens in this week's NBA Draft.

Three days after the forward committed to the team for the upcoming season, Paul George's days as an Indiana Pacer seem to be numbered.

Wojnarowski reported Sunday afternoon that "NBA teams believe that it's George's intention to eventually sign with the Lakers as a free agent in 2018".

But if George does leave the Pacers, it will be a costly financial decision. By doing this, George gives the Pacers the opportunity to trade him and get something in return for him. They could free up space by renouncing Randle and freeing themselves of his $12 million cap hold, but that's the least attractive route.

George made no secret of this at the trade deadline.

"I'm under contract as a Pacer", George said, via the IndyStar.

George's words today must have been disappointing for Lakers fans. The current CBA makes that contract only available to George under a narrow set of circumstances, and only from the Pacers. The Lakers can wait for 2018 and clear space to sign PG-13 outright. Either way, Magic Johnson is in the driver's seat of the franchise's future, and with Paul George in tow - either this year or next - the future looks as bright as can be in Los Angeles.
