Ex-president of Penn State going to jail in sex abuse case

Three former Penn State administrators will spend time in jail for their role in the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse case. Former Athletic Director Gary Schultz and former university Vice Ppresident Tim Curley were sentenced to similar jail terms, to be followed by house arrest.

The scandal led to the firing of longtime football coach Joe Paterno shortly after Sandusky's arrest, and he died of cancer two months later at the age of 85.

Spanier, Schultz and Curley were found guilty of the charges in March, when prosecutors determined they knew of Sandusky molesting boys on Penn State's campus for many years but, along with head football coach Joe Paterno, declined to alert authorities. Spanier was sentenced to two months in jail and an additional 2-10 under house arrest. Curley received a sentence of 7 to 23 mont.

Sandusky was convicted of sexually abusing 10 boys.

The trio of former admins will begin their respective sentences on July 15. "I deeply regret I didn't intervene more forcefully", he said.

Two of the cases against Sandusky heavily involved Curley, Schultz and Spanier.

"What was it about that conversation that made you change your mind?"

A graduate coaching assistant said that in 2001, he witnessed Sandusky molesting a boy in a football team shower.

Penn State has paid out almost a quarter-billion dollars in fines, settlements and other costs associated with the scandal, and the football program suffered heavy NCAA sanctions.

The sentence is for his part in failing to tell police about a sexual abuse incident involving former Assisstant Footbal Coach, Jerry Sandusky. Still, his lawyer has indicated he will appeal the verdict, which is likely to delay any jail time.

"He was a complete and utter failure as a leader when it mattered most", prosecutor Laura Ditka said.

Jurors were shown emails that the prosecutors said showed the men hatched a plan to keep the matter quiet.

The 63-year-old Curley and 67-year-old Schultz told the judge Friday they were sorry they didn't do more. Paterno notified Curley and Schultz, and McQueary met with both of them about a week later.

In sentencing memos, prosecutors accused Curley in particular of "astonishing" and unbelievable memory lapses on the witness stand.

Describing the case as a "Shakespearean tragedy", the judge also chided Paterno for failing to report the crimes, saying: "Paterno could've made that phone call without getting his hands dirty".

In an interview late Friday afternoon, Paterno's son, Jay, said he believed the judge's words misrepresented what actually happened.

Curley and Schultz were arrested in 2011, and Spanier in 2012.

She said he kept Penn State trustees in the dark about the Sandusky complaint and "he allowed children to be harmed".
