Clinging on to her job, Britain's May appoints new ministers

That calculation backfired spectacularly on Thursday as voters stripped her Conservative Party of a parliamentary majority and forced her to turn to a small political party from Northern Ireland to prop up a minority government.

Whether she steps down graciously or hobbles on until her government collapses under the weight of its own contradictions, she is not long for the leadership.

Perhaps that's the real message of this election: Britain's divisions desperately require a political party, and a prime minister, capable of rising above them.

A senior Conservative lawmaker was in Belfast on Saturday for talks with Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), whose 10 seats in the new parliament could give May just enough support to pass legislation.

The U.K.is facing a hung Parliament and May has resisted calls to resign, after her Tories lost 12 seats and the rival Labour Party picked up 29.

"We just haven't won the election".

More geared to messaging than policy, Crosby, alongside business partner and pollster Mark Textor, wanted to bring strict discipline to the campaign, sticking to party slogans and attacking Jeremy Corbyn, the leader of Britain's main opposition Labour party, sources said. That's because less than a year ago she was installed as Tory leader and prime minister after a failed party leadership contest, which followed David Cameron's resignation over the Brexit vote.

In the meantime, I want to place on record my sorrow for the Conservative Members of Parliament who lost their seats, several of whom are close friends.

"I don't think throwing us into a leadership battle at this moment in time, when we are about to launch into these hard negotiations, would be in the best interests of the country", Evans said. But among Republicans, a traditional hostility to "big government" makes pro-worker redistributive policies, some of which the Tories have adopted to win votes, hard to stomach. May stunned the world in April by calling this June election, three years ahead of schedule.

But that gamble did not pay off, as concerns about social programs and security issues replaced Brexit as the main talking points in the United Kingdom. The Conservatives have eight seats short of the figure needed for simple majority.

During this time, the formal Brexit negotiations begin, so the timing of May's epic blunder could not be worse.

Reuters reports that Gunther H. Oettinger, a European Commission budget and human resources commissioner, expressed doubt about the talks starting as planned.

Only two things can be predicted with any confidence. "Time for everyone to regroup". If she remains prime minister — if her famously regicidal party does not defenestrate her immediately — her majority will be neither strong nor stable, particularly because her party is riven by divisions over Brexit, too. "But we are nine days off from the Brexit talks starting", he told BBC Radio. "We have less than two years to negotiate the exit.so we should not waste any time now".

Dr. Nina Musgrave, assistant director at the Centre for Defence Studies at King's College, told CNN that under May's Conservative-DUP alliance, she doesn't see a big change coming in matters of the Middle East, but pointed to the DUP's support for the Israeli state.

Of the agreement she said: "This will allow us to come together as a country and channel our energies towards a successful Brexit deal that works for everyone in this country, securing a new partnership with the European Union which guarantees our long-term prosperity". She could have appealed across party lines, or asked people what outcome they preferred, or sought compromise.

"Britain will now go into its most important challenge in 40 years - extricating itself from the European Union - at a severe disadvantage", NPR's Eleanor Beardsley reports from London.

Tim Bale, professor of politics at Queen Mary University of London, said it's not even clear whether May will now lead those negotiations. But now, after losing her majority, the Conservative Party's embarrassing showing has catapulted British politics into the unknown. "That's what we have seen tonight".

The broadcaster said Sturgeon was "disappointed at the SNP losses".

And Corbyn's critics inside the party remained unconvinced by his leadership. "Theresa May has put Brexit in jeopardy".

"I can still be prime minister", Corbyn said.
