British General Election: Theresa May's gamble that didn't pay off

Democratic Unionist Party leader Arlene Foster left celebrates with Former Democratic Unionist Party Leader Peter Robinson at the counting centre in Belfast Northern Ireland early in the morning

I mean, this is Theresa May's difficulty, that there is this solid core of lawmakers in her party who are very much hard Brexit-ers, and they've been fighting this battle for many years.

Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission, said he was "waiting for visitors coming from London", that he was ready to "open negotiations tomorrow morning at 9.30".

May's gamble in calling an early election backfired spectacularly, as her Conservative Party lost its majority in Parliament.

"I sought, and to be fair to the prime minister, received a categoric assurance that in talking to the DUP that there would be no suggestion of any rollback on LGBTI rights in the rest of the United Kingdom", she said. The party is seeking support from Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party to stay in power.

British Prime Minister Theresa May struck a deal in principle with Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party on Saturday to prop up the Conservative government, stripped of its majority in a disastrous election.

May vowed to fight on, and fight on she did, striking a deal with DUP to reach the 326 seats needed for a majority in parliament.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

He stressed that the campaign led by May was rather disadvantageous for her and was driven by an internal political agenda rather than the Brexit talks, and that the elevated terrorist threat cost her the votes.

Germany's European Commissioner Gunther Oettinger said "a weaker partner weakens the whole thing", while if both sides were strong "you get results more quickly".

Above all, investors are anxious about the general uncertainty surrounding the country - whether a bruised May will resign in due course, whether the Conservatives will be able to form a new government or whether it will be an alliance of opposition parties, led by the Labour Party. "We should clearly come to terms with the British to start as quickly as possible".

"EU did not want #Brexit, but has been prepared to negotiate it since past year", tweeted Siegfried Muresan, spokesperson for the European Parliament's largest grouping, the center-right European People's Party (EPP).

While unnamed Conservative MPs briefed various media outlets about their anger over the decision to call the election and over the way the campaign had been run, some were more outspoken in their criticism.

The Prime Minister met with the Queen at Buckingham Palace at 12.30pm (11.30pm NZT) to get the tick of approval.

The talks were set to officially begin on June 19.

"It is quite possible there will be an election later this year or early next year and that might be a good thing because we can not go on with a period of great instability", he said.

MARTIN: Well, so clearly there's a lot to talk about. The risk of having no deal worries some in Britain, particularly businesses.

Negotiations on Brexit, the U.K.'s exit from the European Union, are just over a week away.

Regarding security - she was in charge of security in Cameron's government, which diminished the number of police, for example, and at the same time we saw two terror attacks in Manchester and London.

It would also in theory make it cheaper for foreign people and companies to spend and invest in Britain, though analysts say any gains would likely be offset by the chilling effect the general uncertainty will have on business investment.
