Admin revokes blocked program to protect immigrant parents

Dept. of Homeland Security Secretary Ends DAPA Program

The administration did not, however, make any decisions on DACA, or Deferred Action for Early Childhood Arrivals, which provides dreamers, or undocumented people who've entered the USA illegally as children, with immunity from deportation.

Rescinding the policy known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, would anger those who have said President Donald Trump is already too tough on immigration enforcement.

Kelly said in a statement, Thursday, he was rescinding the initiative because there was no credible path forward to litigate the now enjoined policy.

DAPA was introduced in November 2014 to help protect parents of US citizens and lawful permanent residents who may be in the country illegally.

And the numbers do bear that out - the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services reported that as of March 31, 124,799 people who had qualified for DACA, had their special permits renewed in the first three months of this year.

Trump on the 2016 campaign trail promised to revoke DACA immediately, and his administration has already deported DACA-protected immigrants. As of March 31, about 787,000 young immigrants have been approved for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, according to government data.

Thousands of Dreamers across the country marked DACA's five-year anniversary on social media Thursday, with many sharing anecdotes of what they've accomplished under the program.

That said, sweeping executive actions, whether by Obama or Trump, are no way to solve America's immigration problems. "The preservation of DACA is a tribute to the strength of the Dreamer movement".

In many cases, they have attended American schools and have little or no recollection of living in the country from which their parents brought them.

President Donald Trump had threatened to axe the Dreamers program, which would have put an estimated 1.7 million people, many of them undocumented students in USA schools, at risk of deportation.

After being stalled in the courts, it has yet to go into effect.

That program was never implemented because a Texas court blocked it at the request of a coalition of 26 state attorneys general. In April, President Trump told the Associated Press (ITALICS) his administration is "not after the dreamers, we are after the criminals".

But he also said the program was similar to the one protecting young immigrants and that both should be abolished.

"There has been no final determination made about the DACA program, which the president has stressed needs to be handled with compassion and with heart", said Jonathan Hoffman, the assistant secretary for public affairs at the department.
