100000 civilians behind Islamic State lines in Iraqi city of Mosul

UNHCR Ivor Prickett

After claiming that part of the city, Iraqi forces embarked on a major push in February to recapture the more densely-populated western part, where the situation is more hard.

The 39 people from Punjab now trapped in Iraq's war-torn Mosul are presumed to be alive, said the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), as the Indian government has received no information to the contrary.

Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Gopal Baglay said "we are in touch with all countries that can help us".

The fall of Mosul would, in effect, mark the end of the Iraqi half of the "caliphate" that Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi declared in a speech from a historic mosque in the Old City.

In an online statement, Islamic State said it killed 40 from the Federal police forces deployed in west Mosul and destroyed eight military vehicles.

UNITED NATIONS — The U.N. humanitarian chief in Iraq says the United Nations believes between 120,000 and 150,000 civilians are trapped in Mosul's Old City, where Islamic State extremists want to keep them as human shields — and shoot at anyone trying to flee.

Iraqi government forces retook eastern Mosul in January then a month later began the offensive on the western side where bout 200,000 civilians remain trapped behind Islamic State lines.

"We know that ISIS moved them with them as they left. locations where the fighting was going on", he said, using another acronym for IS, which is also known as Daesh.

As Iraqi and coalition forces battle for the last neighbourhoods under militant control in West Mosul, they are meeting fierce resistance from ISIS fighters, Bruno Geddo told a news briefing in Geneva. There is hardly any food, water, electricity, fuel.

The attempts of the Iraqi forces to eliminate ISIS are complicated not only with thousands of civilians being used as human shields in the densely populated areas, but also by the fact that this is urban warfare.

Geddo said those who attempted to leave the city were being shot by snipers deliberately aiming at people trying to flee.

Geddo said the UNHCR opened its 13th camp two weeks ago to accommodate the growing numbers of people fleeing Mosul. She warned that they no agency in the world can cope with a situation if 40, 000 people decide to flee at the same time.
